Assessment 1
Data Visualisation and Analytics
Due 3PM, 11th September 2020
Background
The company Fake Energy Consultants Pty. Ltd. has been funded by a company with investments in coal
mines to produce a report comparing solar energy to coal power. The report can be found on Moodle in the
file electricityanalysis.pdf.
Data
The original data, obtained from Open NEM and used to prepare the report, can be found in the file
electricitydata_assignment1.csv. This is also on Moodle. The data have the following columns:
? Column A: The month ranging from February 2007 to June 2020.
? Columns B-I: Electricity generation, measured in GigaWatt hours (GWh), from different energy
sources (e,g, Wind, Hydro, Brown Coal, etc.).
? Columns J-K: Imports and exports of electricity from/to states that neighbour Victoria (Tasmania,
South Australia and NSW).
? Columns L: Emissions intensity, i.e the amount of carbon dioxide emissions for a fixed amount of
generation, measured in kilograms of carbon dioxide emmisions per MegaWatt hour (kgCO2e/MWh).
? Columns M: Average wholesale electricity price measured in Australian dollars per MWh (AUD/MWh).
Part A (10 Marks)
Critically evaluate the report, discussing any shortcomings of each figure as well as the report as a whole.
You may also mention certain positive aspects of how the report has been written. To structure your answers,
you may wish to respond as follows:
1. Provide a critical evaluation of Figure 1.
2. Provide a critical evaluation of Figure 2.
3. Provide a critical evaluation of Figure 3.
4. Provide a critical evaluation of Figure 4.
5. Provide a critical evaluation of the text of the report.
6. Discuss any positive aspects of the report.
Providing answers in the form of bullet points is acceptable.

Part B (5 Marks)
ETX2250 Students ONLY
Using the R package ggplot2 produce an improved version of Figure 3. Make sure you address any of the
issues raised in your answer to Question 3 of Part A. Include the code used to generate this plot in your
response. An RMarkdown template is provided on Moodle to help you do this. Submit the .pdf generated by
this file, rather than than the .Rmd file.
ETF5922 Students ONLY
Using the R package ggplot2 produce an improved version of Figure 4. Make sure you address any of the
issues raised in your answer to Question 4 of Part A. Include the code used to generate this plot in your
response. An RMarkdown template is provided on Moodle to help you do this. Submit the .pdf generated by
